The Town of Raahe has built and developed the Softpolis milieu into a pleasant and urban residential, business and recreational area. The bridges across the canal near Rantakatu and Palokunnankatu streets were ready in the summer of 2003. There are plans to build two arched light-traffic bridges across the canal. The street lighting in the area is beautiful. The promenade by the canal is hugely popular. The traffic has been organized with the needs and the environment of the campus in mind. A number of roads for pedestrians and cyclists have been built to make moving around the town easy. At the moment one is constructing some high-class owner-occupied houses by the canal. These buildings will be connected both to the district heating network and the cable TV network. It is also possible to connect households to the local area network, which means that the people living by the canal will have fast Internet connections. These new apartments will be furnished according to the purchasers’ wishes. Most of the new houses will be ready by Christmas. And this is not all. According to the Raahe Town Plan, it is possible to extend the residential area in the future. It is easy to get to the sea from the town centre. Local residents have an opportunity to rent a berth by the canal Kauneuskanava. Both ends of the canal reach the sea, so it is possible to go round the area by small boat or canoe. The canal shore is an excellent place to live, for the Pikkulahti area quite near provides settings for various recreational activities, including jogging paths and a bathing beach. The nearest quest harbour is located close to the Raahe Museum. The Town Library is located on Rantakatu street. The historical Old Town of Raahe with its services stands on the other side of the river, quite next door. The Pitkänkari sports ground will be used as before, and it will be renovated. An emergency shelter building will be constructed on the area. These premises can be used e.g. as meeting/club/fitness rooms or as facilities for sports, exhibitions or education.
